December 1837 term of court in Edmonson County, Nancy Davis appeared and apprenticed her son, Seth Davis, "age 18 yrs., Aug 19 next" to Robert M. Davis [Seth's uncle]

Military Service: Company E of the 11th Regiment of KY Volunteer Cavalry on 06 Sep 1862, discharged on 3 July 1865 at Louisville, KY. Bible record of his daughter Nancy Ellen Davis states he joined the Army on 06 May 1862.

The following information was taken from Civil War Pension files:
During the Civil War, Seth Holland Davis, a resident of Stockholm, KY, joined the Union Army, Company E of the 11th Regiment of KY Volunteer Cavalry on 06 Sep 1862. He was discharged on 3 July 1865 at Louisville, KY. On 10 June 1890, he applied for a disability pension and signed an affidavit which states, "That while a member of the organization aforesaid, in the service and in the line of his duty, near Knoxville in the State of Tenn, on or about Oct 1863 he incurred injury of left ankle by his horse falling on his left leg. Also about the same time and place he contracted rheumatism from exposure..." The statement goes on to say he was not treated in the hospital for the ailments.

Served in the Union Army, Company E, 11th KY Cavalry, with his brother William W. Davis. They were involved in fighting around Knoxville, TN in the fall of 1863. They enlisted together and were discharged together.

Reported to be a "first class" man in the community, per testimony in William W. Davis' pension file.

Invalid Pension: Pensioned from July 30, 1890, under Act of June 27, 1890, for Rheumatism, loss of sight of right eye, impaired vision of left eye, and senility, $12 [per month].

28 Oct 1886: Declaration for Original Invalid Pension. State of KY, County of Edmonson, On this 28th day of October A.D. one thousand eight hundred and eighty 6, personally appeared before me, Clerk of the County Court, a court of record within and for the County and State aforesiad, Seth H. Davis, aged 67 years, a resident of Edmonson, State of KY, who being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is the identical Seth H. Davis who was enrolled on the 6th day of September 1862, in Company E of the 11th Regiment of KY Vols, commanded by Capt. W.M. Houchin and was honorably discharged at Louisville, KY on the 3rd day of July, 1865; that his personal description is as follows: Age 67 years; height 5 feet 11 1/2 inches; complexion fair; hair light; eyes blue. That while a member of the organization, aforesaid, in the service and in the line of his duty at Louisville, in the State of KY on or about the 1st day of November 1862 he contracted a disease of the hips by reason of which he is unable to walk. That he was treated in hospitals as follows: Bowling Green, KY. That he has not been employed in the military or naval service otherwise than as stated above. That since leaving the service this applicant has resided in the County of Edmonson, in the State of Kentucky, and his occupation has been that of a farmer. That prior to his entry into the service above named he was a man of good, sound, physical health, being when enrolled a farmer. That he is now one half disabled from obtaining his subsistence by manual labor by reason of his injuries, above described, received in the United States; and he therefore makes this declaration for the purpose of being placed on the invalid pension roll of the United States."

15 Apr 1891: Physical Examination of Seth H. Davis: "Upon examination we find the following objective conditions: Pulse rate 64, respiration 17, temperature 98, height 5 feet 10 1/2 inches; weight 130 pounds, age 72 years.

On 18 November 1896, the pension record states, "that Bettie Davis is the minor child of Seth H. Davis who was a Private in Co E 11th KY Vol Inf, and that said soldier died at Stockholm, KY on the 22nd day of June in the year A.D. 1896 by reason of War Disease and old age that Meriah [Maria] Davis, the mother of the child of aforesaid died on the ___ day of ___ at near Stockholm, KY and that the date of birth of the said child is as follows: age of child bornd June the 12th 1882. He further declares that the soldier was never in the Confederate service. He further declares that the parents of the said child were married at near Stockholm on the 12 day of March in the year 1880 by Rev. J.L. Carnell, I think. Also declares that said child has not aided or abetted the rebellion in the United States; that prior application has been filed in behalf of the child."

Email from Norman Warnell 02 Oct 2002 : "A few years ago I had an opportunity to visit with Virginia Sanders up in Jefferson Co., Ky. Her husband (now deceased) was born at Joppa and was related to the Smiths/Davis/Sanders who lived around Joppa. He had an old Bible and I copied the following from it:
