July 2005 – present

Primary duties include teaching all introductory level Women’s Studies courses (WOMN 200) and the Women’s Health (PH 464G) course.  Other undergraduate and graduate classes taught as needed.


Adjunct Instructor, Department of Public Health, Western Kentucky University
August 2002 – present 

Teach undergraduate and graduate courses including, Women’s Health (PH 464/G), Personal Health (PH 100), and Human Sexuality (PH 365).  Also active in collaborative projects such as an investigation of health risk behaviors among students at a Western Kentucky university as part of the Nation College Health Risk Behavior Survey, an online investigation of recreation drug use among adults, World AIDS Day, and various other health-related programs.

University Experience Instructor/Library & Research Skills Coordinator, Department of University Experience, Western Kentucky University
August 2001 – July 2005

Duties included coordinating and supervising library tours, providing introductory research skills and library technology instruction to students through electronic course software (Blackboard), overseeing the test database, grading assignments, and maintaining database records for approximately 3,000 students per year.  Responsible for developing and overseeing the library and research skills curriculum for the University Experience courses offered on the two campuses of Western Kentucky University, training faculty and students to use Blackboard effectively, training library tour leaders and graders, supervising graduate assistants and teaching a limited number of sections of the University Experience. Duties also included assessing the effectiveness of the library skills component of the course.

Instruction included assisting students in applying strategies for college success.  Areas of focus include using the WKU Libraries and available technology; planning and using time more efficiently; developing academic skills in reading, note taking, studying and test taking; enhancing critical thinking, and problem solving; developing networking and communication skills; making responsible choices; and health and wellness.  The class also included the Library Skills requirements via the Internet.  This class was designed to be an affective resource for students through the use of open discussion and active participation.

Community Health Advisor and Educator, The Kentucky Partnership,

Health educator for a grant-funded project, “Bridging the Gap,” designed to reduce the incidence of breast cancer in rural areas.  "Bridging the Gap" was developed through funding from the National Action Plan on Breast Cancer to provide breast health information to women using the Internet. "Bridging the Gap" developed a structure to reach women in their own communities at their local gathering sites, providing Internet access. Duties included providing seminars on-site in rural Kentucky communities, providing CEUs for health care professionals, preparing monthly and quarterly reports for granting agency, designing and implementing continual program assessment, working with local coalitions, seeking other funding opportunities, and maintaining the Kentucky Partnership web page.

Women's Studies – WOMN 200
Introduction to Women's Studies.  This class explores what it means to be female in American culture. Even though it is not always obvious, gender plays an important role in every aspect of our daily lives. This class attempts to raise the consciousness of the student in the areas of the social construction of gender, the historical framework for analyzing women's lives, the issues of "today’s" woman, and the future of women in our society. We delve into what the term "gender equality" means and examine the cultural, political, and economic landscape on which these conception of equality were built.


Women’s Studies – WOMN 400
Western Feminist Thought.  This course explores the categories of thought and revolutionary developments that have affected society’s attitudes about women and more broadly, about gender.  It weaves together two approaches: a historical overview of such developments as liberal, radical, and black feminist thought; and cultural analysis of such gendered social practices as pornography, mothering, and masculinity.  It also explores ethical issues from a variety of feminist perspectives.  This course provides students with a great deal of civic engagement and service learning opportunities.

Women's Health - PH 464/G/464G
An analysis of the major health problems of contemporary women, with a special emphasis on health promotion, disease prevention, and consumer health concerns.

Personal Health – PH 100
This course emphasizes factors influencing behavior related to health in our complex society are explored. The major purpose of the course is for students to assess their individual behavior in the light of current scientific knowledge concerning mental health, health care, health products, prevention of disease, nutrition, exercise, fitness, weight control and the total well being. 

Human Sexuality – PH 365
Includes sociological, physiological, and psychological aspects of human sexuality in relation to family life, courtship, marriage, reproduction, child health, morbidity, and aging. Includes information on sex education in the home, school, and community.

Sexuality Education – PH 468/G
Emphasis in this course is on planning, implementation and evaluation of school and community sexuality education programs. Health and policy issues which affect sexuality and sexual behavior are addressed along with analysis of contemporary health issues with sexual dimensions.  

Research Interests:
Ecofeminism, food production, college retention, student engagement and community service, interdisciplinary learning and education, social identity theory, social epidemiology, women's health, and global and International issues.
