TASK 2: PRE-READING

Anticipation Guide:

Everyone has different ways of looking at things and has different opinions. This part of task 2 will help you develop your own opinions about certain things before you read the book and then when you are done reading the book, these opinions might change. The materials manager should print out an anticipation guide for each member of the group. The anticipation guide can be found here. Each person in the group will be asked to fill out their own anticipation guide, because everyone has different opinions. When you agree with a statement put a X in the column below AGREE. If you disagree with a statement put a X in the column below DISAGREE.

When everyone is done with their anticipation guide, the scribe will add up how many agrees and disagrees there are for each statement. The reporter will report these to the rest of the group when the scribe is finished.

(After the book is read, the same anticipation guide can be done again to see how opinions change throughout the book. If you have some extra time, go ahead and give this a try and see if you have any different opinions.)

This is the time that the book will actually be read. During this time, I would like you to listen and write down characteristics about the character, predictions made during reading, questions you have, and vocabulary words that you do not know.

The materials manager should now print out the literature map by clicking here.

When did it happen?

The materials manager needs to print off a copy of the Story Map here. You will only need one sheet for the group.

After listening to and reading the story, How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World, you should be aware of what happened in this story.  Together as a group, you will identify what happened at the beginning, middle, and the end of the story.  The writer will record the groups thoughts, and then the reporter will report their information to the instructor.

When the group is done with this activity, it can be discussed with the rest of the group.

  Task 4: Post Reading

Polar Opposites

After reading this book, there is one more thing that I would like you to do. We are going to think about the main character of the book, the little baker. In this activity, you will be given lists of words and if you think that the little baker was more like this in the beginning of the story, put a B in the line beside the word. The word on each line that you think that Ike was more like in the end, you put an E beside. If the word does not describe the little baker at all, put a X beside it.

The materials manager should print this off now and give it to the group. This can be done together. The polar opposites activity can be found here.
