FORENSIC METEOROLOGIST




I earned a Ph.D. in Physical Geography, Climatology/Remote Sensing from Indiana State University in 1980.

During my professional career, I have often been called upon to render an expert opinion for a variety of businesses, schools, and especially law firms.  My hourly rates are negotiable, but require a two hour minimum commitment.  I can usually accomplish quite a lot in 2 hours time!
 

For Businesses, Industries, and Municipalities, the work centers around:

  • Establishing "Safe Areas" to use as possible storm shelters
  • Gathering meteorological/climatological data for various production processes
  • Designing weather stations and and data collection instrumentation for various purposes
  • Flood water monitoring


Consultations for law firms and their associated court cases have covered many themes.  They all include reconstructing some or all of the weather conditions during given dates and at specific geographical locations.
 

Types of Cases include:

  • Traffic accidents (numerous cases)
  • Flood insurance claims (numerous cases)
  • Workman's Compensation
  • Pollution hazards (several cases)
  • A rape trial
  • Murder trials (3 cases)
  • Cases involving accidental deaths (a lightning strike, an accidental drowning in a flash flood episode)
  • Fall on icy surfaces (several cases)
  • Damages to homes, businesses, and construction sites (several cases both wind and ice induced)
  • The spread of fires due to winds (two cases)
  • The spread of pollutants due to winds (several cases)
  • Establishing the presence or absence of a tornado (several cases)


A typical Consultation Report includes the following elements:

        1.  Official U.S. Government Archived Meteorological Data

        2.  A Synoptic Analysis (the Nationwide weather picture for that time period)

        3.  The Localized Weather Elements (site and time specific)

        4.  The conclusions pertinent to the case
 

Depositions:  I have had several experiences with stenography, as well as audio/video taping.
 

Court Appearances:  Though I prefer NOT to do this.  I have appeared in courtrooms, on many occasions in several parts of the country.
