Topcat 2000 : WKU Library catalog, with remote links to other libraries

World Cat (trial) : a temporary (though maybe longer) trial of a quick link to the OCLC World Catalogue datebase, which contains the library of Congress and all U.S. libraries and many other collections; WKU holdings appear at the top and are identified as such, so it’s a very quick way to search WKU’s catalog  

WKU Library Database Portal : on-campus  & off-campus access to WKU library databases.

Topper InfoPortal (TIP) : WKU Library gateway to online resources and research tools.

TDNet : WKU Electronic Journal Finder : new service providing easy access to thousands of electronic journals found in the 80 databases WKU Libraries provides to the campus community, including those from the Kentucky Virtual Library; available to anyone with a WKU e-mail account

Philosopher's Index - the main philosophy index in North America <top> 

Routledge Encyclopedia of Philosophy - This brand new work is an excellent resource for starting research on a topic in philosophy. It is written at several levels of competence and has annotated bibliographical entries as well as a general index of philosophical terms.  REP is available (only) from networked on-campus computer locations.  Click on the WKUNET (NAL) icon on the Windows desktop and proceed to the Library Databases section.  The library also has the printed version (10 vols.), located in the Helm Reference Room at B51 / .R68 / 1998. <top> 

Project Muse - full-text contents of over 150 academic journals, many in philosophy & other humanities.  Click on "Journals." <top> 

JSTOR - growing full-text archive of back issues for a number of important Philosophy (also History, English, etc.) journals.  Allows both general and more focused searches. <top> 

Historical Abstracts - annotated references to books and articles on historical topics from the Renaissance onward.  Published since 1954, HA covers over 2,000 journals published throughout the world, in the area of history as well as in other social sciences and humanities fields. Currently accessible only from on-campus locations. <top>

First Search - 14 databases in different academic areas [arts, sciences, business, education], covering books and articles. Use the authorization number and password provided in CourseInfo, under Course Documents. <top> 

History Book Project - over 500 books in the field of history, works of major importance to historical studies broadly conceived (accessible only from on-campus locations). <top>

Lexis-Nexis Databases  <top> 

Academic Universe provides full-text documents from over 5,600 news, business, legal, medical, and reference publications, including national and regional newspapers, wire services, broadcast transcripts, international news, business news journals, industry and market news, and non-English language sources. AU also includes: U.S. Federal and state case law, codes, regulations, legal news, law reviews, international legal information; Company Financial Information (formerly Primark Disclosure Global Access) which provides financial data for over 12,000 U.S. public companies extracted from SEC reports. 

Congressional Universe includes: U.S. legislative information and congressional publications, including hearings, reports, prints and documents and the Legislative Histories; the full text of proposed legislation and its status, as well as relevant congressional publications on key American public policy issues.

Statistical Universe gives access to: statistical surveys, charts, and tables produced by federal agencies, states, intergovernmental organizations, professional and trade organizations, commercial publishers, independent research organizations, state government agencies, and universities; it also includes the online version of the American Statistics Index (ASI).

Government Periodicals Universe provides: detailed subject and author indexing to access approximately 170 magazines and newsletters with substantial research value which are published by U.S. government agencies. The database includes retrospective coverage through 1988 of over 70 additional Federal publications of major research, reference, and general interest value. Government Periodicals Universe is updated quarterly with approximately 2500 additional articles.

Access to the Lexis-Nexis databases is restricted by IP address via the campuswide information system, WKUNet. Dialup remote access is not available.

ProQuest - an online information service at UMI (University Microfilms International. It provides convenient search and retrieval from one of the world's largest collections of information, including summaries of articles from over 5,000 publications, with many in full text, full image format. Use the password provided in class. <top>

Newsbank - contains Global Newsbank: news article covering politics, economics, culture, business, science, technology, and the environment from around the world.  Articles are in English and are from over 1000 translated broadcasts, news agency transmissions, wire services, newspapers, magazines and government documents; and The Courier-Journal (complete text since 1988). <top>

Shepard's Online - comprehensive legal database; citation search tool <top>

Ingenta Connect - very useful site containing a huge database of journals in many academic fields. One can examine the Table of Contents of specific  journals or do general searches of the entire database according to author, title, or subject.  Registered users can also order articles for electronic or standard delivery (for a charge).  The site contains back issues over several years, and links to other bibliographic tools and libraries. <top>

Interlibrary Loan (ILL)  (Many of the items you find in the bibliographies above may not be available in the WKU library. In that case, either use those that are, or order non-local items through Interlibrary Loan (ILL). You may contact ILL online, but your requests must be submitted in writing at the ILL office, located at the far end of the Reference Room (4th floor) in Helms Library. Be sure to order early, however, since it takes time to receive materials through the mail. In some cases you may need a faculty signature to submit your request.)
