Joseph Had a Little Overcoat

Today you are going to be reading about a very special person. You will read a story called Joseph Had a Little Overcoat. In this book you will meet the main character Joseph and see what useful things he does with his overcoat when it becomes old and worn. This book was written and illustrated by the same person, Simms Taback. He has several other popular books out that you would enjoy and might of heard of, one is There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Fly. There is work to be done! Now that you have read or heard the book, Joseph Had a Little Overcoat, your job is to perform the task listed below. When you read a book, do you know all the words? Do you pay attention to the pictures in books and see how they tell part of the story just like the words do? Do you notice how you could perform or do some of the same things the characters do? Do you notice how you would do things differently if you were the character in the book? Once you finish all the task you will have a better understanding of the book, vocabulary from the book and a better understanding of recycling.

There will be four task that you have to accomplish. Task 1 is vocabulary instruction, Task 2 is a pre-reading activity, Task 3 is a during reading activity, and Task 4 is a post reading activity. Once you have finished all the task, there will be an evaluation rubric that you need to fill out. But before we can get started you have to know the rules. After you have read the rules you can begin performing the task.

The Rules:

You will be working with 3 other students in a group.  In group work, everyone works!  Each student will perform a different role in each group:

Person 1:  Reader - it is this person's job to read to the group.

Person 2:  Materials Manager - it is this person's job to make sure the group has the materials (paper, pencils, printouts, etc.) necessary to perform the task.

Person 3:  Recorder - it is this person's job to make any notes or fill out any forms as the group dictates.

Person 4:  Reporter - it is this person's job to report the group's progress/findings to the teacher/class.

Now you are ready for the task ahead. Are you ready to begin. All you have to do is click on each of the task in the boxes below and it will take you to the correct page. Good luck and remember that everyone in your group works and has there own specific job.

After you have completed each of the task be sure that you complete the evaluation rubric. Be honest when you are filling this out.
