FORMER STUDENTS' COMMENTS

COMMENTS FROM END-OF-TERM COURSE EVALUATIONS:
  • “There were more opportunities in this class to improve my writing than in any other class I have taken at Western.”
  • “The one-on-one conferences with the instructor were wonderful. I saw my pieces grow stronger after each of these conferences. I know it made a difference in my writing as well as the rest of the students in our class.”
  • “I feel that [the instructor] gave me advice on how to grow as a writer, but more importantly as a person. [She] ha[s] made me realize things about myself that I have never before noticed.”
  • The class, overall, became a sort of life-line for me.  I was able to overcome my personal demons and realize that I really do have stories worth writing.
ADVICE FROM STUDENTS ON WHAT TO INCLUDE IN THE VIDEO CLIPS FOR MY WEBSITE:
  • “One thing I think you should definitely include is your style and approach toward teaching. Most teachers care only about sticking to the books and a set routine. You are one of the greatest teachers I have had, and I'm not trying to suck up and get out of my portfolio. I love your attitude toward learning. You allow us the opportunity to discuss important issues with our classmates, gather new information, and then reflect on that information so that we can view the issue from a different stand point. I love the fact that your only rule in class is to ‘get published!’ You have high expectations for your students.”
  • Throughout this semester you have opened my eyes to a new world of writing. In my opinion, my writing is much better, and it is because I am able to write what I enjoy and about topics that are important to me.
If I did not know you, I would want to know that you approach writing from a different angle than most teachers. You encourage your students to be honest, enjoy what they're doing, and worry about mistakes later.”
  • “First of all, I think you are going to come across as a very caring, culturally diverse, and well-rounded person no matter what image that you try to project. Confident and easy-going is never out of fashion. I would emphasize the way you bridge the gap from the Old World ethics and mores to the modern Western cyberculture. I would particularly highlight your grasp of technology and the possibilities it offers for education both inside and outside the classroom. Two-way communication between teacher and student is definitely a keyword and catchphrase. You might want to mention the way you incorporate other arts and sciences into your curriculum to create a multi-disciplinary learning experience. Finally, a quiet, piquant and piercing awareness will cease any doubts of competence.”
  • “I would say just be yourself and emphasize your love for writing and communication. Your excitement and enthusiasm for teaching and trying new things would be excellent in a video. I know as a student, I would want to see a teacher who is genuinely interested in my work and me. I also want to know my teacher is willing to help. You might even mention your reason for being a teacher….You might also mention how you give the students the freedom to design their own course (not too many teachers do that).”
WHAT STUDENTS LEARN IN THE COURSE
  • “I learned that writing is not easy. I learned that you have to want to learn and have a desire to want to be a better writer.”
  • “I have learned more about my writing style than in the previous three years as a college student.”
  • “I learned the importance of constructive feedback.”
  • “I have really developed in not only my writing but also in my confidence and creativity.”
WHAT STUDENTS SAY ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
  • “I loved my instructor. I found her highly entertaining and helpful.”
  • “I liked how [the instructor] let us discuss what we thought about readings. [She] never gave us limits to what we could discuss in [her] class. Even if what we were discussion didn't go with what we read for that day, [she] still let us talk, and even talked with us about topics some professors would never discuss with their students.
  • “Dr. Judith is the best English professor I have had in college. She wants nothing but the best writing out of all her students but is realistic about her expectations. Dr. Judith's main concern is that her students learn how to improve their writing and to recognize what good writing entails. Dr. Judith is open minded and is balanced in her views as a professor.”
  • “She really cares about writing. She is also very encouraging.”
  • “Don't leave WKU, Dr. Judith. You are an inspiration to students like me who were afraid of trying something new and taking a chance.”
  • “She is a fantastic person and a great teacher.”
  • “She is very passionate about her students and about writing.”
