We are a professional association of philosophers, but anyone interested in the study of philosophy is welcome to join. We have a diverse group of interesting people. We meet twice a year to discuss issues of current concern. The Fall meeting, held at Georgetown College, centered around the theme"Reason and Terror".In the morning we meet for coffee and refreshments before adjourning to a conference room to hear papers. This year the papers were "Degrees of Moral Responsibility and the War on Terrorism" by Scott Davison, Morehead State University and "Is Kantian Ethics Left Defenseless in the Face of Evil?" by Mathew Stapleton, Marshall University.
After lunch, we had a panel discussion on "Challenges and Opportunities of Undergraduate Philosophy Education in the Commonwealth". This was a lively discussion with professors from many Kentucky universities including Eileen John of the University of Louisville, Anita Superson of the University of Kentucky and Norman Wirzba of Georgetown College.
We then had a panel discussion on the books After the Terror (Ted Honderich, Edinburgh University Press, 2002) and Violence, Terrorism and Justice (R.G. Frey and C.W. Morris, ed. Cambridge University Press, 1991). This discussion was hosted by Avery Kolers of the University of Louisville, Bradford Hadaway of Georgetown and Nancy Potter of the University of Louisville.
Our Presidential Address this fall was given by Roger Ward of Georgetown College, KPA President. It was entitled "Reason and the War on Terror".
We had an interesting and enlightening time and we would invite anyone interested in the pursuit of knowledge to join one of our meetings.
The date and topic of the Spring meeting have not yet been determined.
