Tips for Success in Accounting 402
  • Follow syllabus and directions carefully
  • Come to class prepared
  • You should read the assigned materials prior to class. In class you have the opportunity to raise questions and obtain clarification of issues raised by the assignment materials.
  • You should always be ready to discuss the assigned materials and questions about the material.
  • Plan to spend 1 to 2 hours outside of class for each hour of class time
  • Never miss class, you've paid for it
  • If you don't understand, ask questions.  You should write down any questions that stop you from completing an assignment. You should get these questions answered in class, during office hours, or by raising them using E-mail.
  • Do library research early, so you have time to sort through what you find
  • Turn assignments in on time
  • Do not fall behind in class work
  • Prepare for exams at least one week in advance
  • You are also expected to take all tests on the dates scheduled.
  • Form a study group.  You are strongly encouraged to use group
  • study techniques.
  • Invest in a watch.
  • Do not try to work full time and carry a full academic load-- Recommended: 15 hour academic load and maximum work load of approximately 15 hours. (see below)

recent excerpt from a student e-mail:

Dr. Hall,

You know I read your advice in your syllabus before the semester started about working only 15 hours and taking only 15 hours of classes, but I thought I could do better than the average student.  So I took 18 hours of classes and my job was not as flexible as they said it would be for school so I wound up working 30-35 hours per week.  Until the fall of 2007 I had made an "A" in every accounting I had taken (200, 201, 300, 301, 310).  I thought I could get my streak back on track, but . . . this one didn't turn out well.  Sorry that I didn't perform as well as I have in the past, in your class.  If anyone every wants to question your "15 hours work/classes" advice again,  just refer them to me!

Excerpts from Sound Money,  a weekly production on National Public Radio:
Host: Chris Farrell
How many hours can a student work before their job starts affecting their grades?

      Wanda Walker
I just read that, it is 10 hours for a freshman and 15 hours for an upperclassman.

       Guest: Rich Black
Wanda's right on for the work hours. Anything over 20 hours a week seems to depress grades.
