417: Minor in Mathematics
Current
Program
A minor in mathematics requires a minimum of 18 semester hours.
The courses MATH 126, MATH 227, and MATH 307* are required. In
addition, the student is required to complete two courses from MATH
305, MATH 310, MATH 317, MATH 327, MATH 329, MATH 331, or STAT 301**.
* Students majoring in engineering may replace MATH 307 with MATH 350.
** Students may not count both MATH 329 and STAT 301 in the minor.
Proposed
Revised Program
A minor in mathematics requires a minimum of 18 semester hours.
At least 9 hours must be at the 300/400 level in mathematics.
Required courses: MATH 136 (4 hrs), MATH 137 (4 hrs), MATH 307 (3
hrs) – 11 hours total
Students majoring in engineering may replace MATH 307 with MATH 350 (3
hrs)
Other courses that may apply to the minor are MATH 237 (4 hrs), 305,
310, 315, 317, 323, 331, 382, 398, 405, 406, 409, 415, 417, 423, 431,
432, 435, 439, 450, 470, 475 (up to 3 hours), 482 or STAT 301.
Students may not count both MATH 382 and STAT 301 in the minor.
Note: The number of courses taken and actual hours earned will
depend on whether or not the student completes MATH 237 (Multivariable
Calculus).
Case I – The
student completes MATH 237:
Then the student will have MATH 136, 137, 237, and MATH 307 (15 hrs
total). The student will still need 6 more hours of 300/400 level
mathematics which requires two more 3 hour courses. Therefore,
the student will complete a total of 6 courses for 21 hours.
Case II – The
student does not complete MATH 237:
Then the student will have MATH 136, 137, and MATH 307 (11 hrs
total). The
student will still need 6 more hours of 300/400 level mathematics,
which brings the total to 17 hours. To earn the additional
required hour,
the student may
(i) Take another 3-hour math class to make a total
of 6 courses for 20 hours.
(ii) Complete a 1-hour Independent Study Project using the
course MATH 398.
(iiii) Upon availability, complete a 1 to 3 Hour Special Topics
Course numbered as MATH 475.
