Upcoming Changes to the Mathematics Programs and Courses
  Effective Fall 2010

1.  MATH 126 and MATH 227 will be re-numbered as MATH 136 and MATH 137 and will become 4-credit hour courses that include lecture and recitation.

2.  Students who wish to declare a 728 or 528 mathematics major will initially be declared as "Seeking Admission."  In order to be granted admission into either of these majors, a student must satisfy the following requirements:

     (i)  Complete MATH 136, MATH 137, AND MATH 307 or MATH 310.

    (ii)  Earn a grade of C or better in each of the courses taken in Item (i).

   (iii)  Have an overall GPA of at least 2.4 in the mathematics program courses completed prior to admission (MATH 136 and above).

3. We are re-numbering MATH 329 and MATH 429 as MATH 382 and MATH 482 and are changing the prerequisites of MATH 382 to MATH 310 and MATH 327.

4.
We are changing the prerequisites of MATH 403 to MATH 205 and MATH 206 with a grade of C or better OR Math 211 and Math 212 with a grade of C or better.

5.
We are changing the prerequisites of MATH 411 to MATH 205, MATH 206, and MATH 308 with a grade of C or better, OR MATH 211, MATH 212, and MATH 308 with a grade of C better, OR permission of instructor.

6.
We are changing the prerequisites of MATH 413 to MATH 117 or MATH 126, with a grade of C or better.

7.  A new course is being developed for Gatton Academy/Honors Program Students:  MATH 371 – Advanced Computational Problem Solving (Prerequisite: CS 240 with a grade of C or better; Pre/Corequisite: MATH 136).

8.  The Major in Middle Grades Mathematics (730) is being revised to a minimum of 32 hours of mathematics with a requirement change of
MATH 117 and 126    OR  MATH 136 and 137;    (7 or 8 hrs).  Both changes are due to the revisions and re-numberings of MATH 126 and MATH 227 listed above in Item 1.

9.  We are deleting the courses MATH 132 and MATH 232.  Therefore in the mathematics majors, the required calculus sequence will be MATH 136 and MATH 137.  (Students will no longer be able to take MATH 122-132-232.)

10.
We are re-numbering MATH 327 to MATH 237 and changing its prerequisite to MATH 137 with a grade of C or better.

11.  We are changing the prerequisite of STAT 301 to  MATH 136 or MATH 142.

12.  We are developing two new statistics courses:  STAT 401 – Regression Analysis and STAT 402 – Experimental Design.

13.  We are
developing a minor in Applied Statistics.  The requirements will be
         (i)  MATH 136 or 142           (ii)  STAT 301, 330, and 401
       (iii)  At least 6 credit hours from the following:
              Any 300-level or 400-level STAT course other than 301, 330, and 401;
              MATH 382, 482, or 470;
              At most 3 credit hours of 300-400 level statistical coursework relevant to the student’s area of study
              (with prior approval from the Statistics Education Committee of the Department of Mathematics and
              Computer Science)

14.  We are eliminating the 21-Hour Minor in Mathematics Certifiable for Secondary Teaching.  All students currently in this minor program must complete all requirements by December 2011.

15.  We are revising the Minor in Mathematics (417) to account for the number and hour changes in the calculus sequence.  See Minor in Math for details.
