Subject: Mathematics # Students: 15 #IEP Students: NA
Major Content: Geometric Shapes Unit Title: Pattern Blocks
Objective(s):Working cooperatively, the group for the given amount of time, the group will develop a
- Group objective:
list of five characteristics that accurately describe the given block according to the
Recording Group Sheet. After working in the expert group for a given amount of time, the student will teach- Individual objective:
his/her team at least five accurate characteristics of the given pattern block according to
the recording sheet.
Connections:Kentucky Learning Goals and Expectations
(Goal 2)
Students will develop their abilities to apply core concepts and principles from mathematics, the science, the arts, the humanities, social studies, practical living studies, and vocational studies to what they will encounter throughout their lives.
Academic Expectation 2.9
Students understand space and dimensionality concepts and use them appropriately and accurately.
Core Content for Assessment
(MA-E-2.1.3)
Students will describe properties of basic three-dimensional shapes including spheres, cones, cylinders, pyramids, cubes, and triangular and rectangular prisms.
Program of Studies
Primary Mathematics
Students will identify, describe, model, draw, and classify/sort three-dimensional shapes including spheres, cones, rectangular solids, and pyramids.
Real Life Application
Student will learn to recognize geometric shapes such as buildings, road signs, and even art works on a daily basis and will be able to recognize their significance.
Kentucky’s Learning Goals and Expectations
(Goal 4)
Students shall develop their abilities to become responsible members of a family, work group, or community, demonstrating effectiveness in community service.Context:
Students have been working with three-dimensional geometric shapes and their individual attributes. This lesson continues to concentrate on geometric shapes

Recording Sheets for Individuals and for team efforts
Procedures:
1. We have been learning about shapes and how to describe them by their attributes for the last few times during math so can anyone tell me what is the word that we use to describe the individual characteristics of shapes.
2. Allow for some student to give the accurate response and then divide the students into groups by giving them a number from 1 to 4 and tell them that today we are going to divide into groups to do some more work with shapes and their attributes.
3. Give each group a bag of four pattern blocks.
We have been working with shapes and some characteristics of them and today we are
going to divide into groups in order to become experts of these four basic shapes. Shapes
have unique characteristics that allow us to identify them so today we are going to learn
about these four shapes and we need to be able to describe them accurately to others so
they can understand them and picture them from our descriptions.
1. Groups must assign each individual to on of the following:
- Apply Acquired Skills:
This time give out the pattern block bags and divide the students into new groups
according to the shapes students received. Have the students get together and develop
attributes of their particular shape and each member should write down these attributes.
1. Now instruct the students to go back to their initial groups and give them a given amount of time to share the attributes of their shape with the other group members.
2. Go over each shape with the whole class and list the attributes of each shape.
Student Assessment:
Tool:
Expert Recording Sheet
Criteria:*Student actively participated with the groups and taught more than five attributes of their assigned shape to the group and all were accurate descriptors.
+Students actively participated within the groups and taught five attributes of their assigned shape to the group and all were accurate descriptors.
-Students actively participated within the groups but taught less than five attributes to the group or some of the attributes were not accurate descriptors.
Group Assessment:
Tool: Team Recording Sheet
Criteria:
5 points Students listed at least five attributes that accurately described their assigned pattern
block on the team recording sheet..3 points Students listed less than five attributes or one – two were inaccurate descriptors on the
team recording sheet.1 point Students listed less than five attributes and three-five were inaccurate descriptors.
